How do the UK’s constituent countries compare to other political divisions?
aceproceed asked:
I’m curious about this and I’m sure I could read a volume of books on the matter without getting much of a good idea… But my main question is : How do England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland fit into the United Kingdom as compared to say an American state or Canadian province?

Are a majority of matters controlled at the level of the United Kingdom as a whole, things like health care, defense, etc.
Or, is the level of autonomy much higher than with most other divisions in other nations?
I know it’s a very broad question but if anyone had a very basic rundown, I’d appreciate it. It’s something of interest to me but it seems the books or sites regarding the matter offer a far more specialized view, no simple explanation of the main picture.
Thank you
